Things to Do with Your Kids
- Instead of Homework

homework

One of my goals with this site is to convince parents that, for the most part, homework is a colossal waste of time and energy. Our children are going to be grown and gone soon enough. Do we want to spend the time we have left forcing them to do something that, in many cases, has little benefit and can actually be harmful?

Right now, I simply want you to consider another reality- Enjoyable Weeknights with Your Family. Think about some of the things you and your children could do if you didn't have to deal with their homework:

  • Take a walk around the neighborhood. Bring the dog!

  • Walk to a friend's house. Ask them to join you.

  • Watch TV. Together.

  • Watch a movie. On a school night! You have time!

  • Look through family photo albums. Laugh at your clothes and hairstyles.

  • Watch home movies. Hear those sweet baby voices again.

  • Record new home movies.

  • Cook dinner together. Try a new recipe. You even have time to go the store for ingredients.

  • Bake a fancy- or just messy- dessert

  • Do an arts and crafts project.

  • Play a game.

  • Pull out a board game. Ask your kids teach you how to play one of their video games.

  • Sit in the backyard and watch your little ones run in the sprinklers.

  • Sit in the backyard and talk to your big ones about school, friends, the future.

  • Teach them a skill you learned as a child like knitting or yodelling.

  • Call out-of-town relatives.

  • Write a family letter.

  • Make some cards for upcoming birthdays and anniversaries.

  • Go to the park.

  • Lay on the grass and watch the clouds go by.

  • Get ice cream after an early dinner.

  • Go to the plant nursery. Give each child a budget and let them choose their own flowers.

  • Plan a vacation.

  • Plan a party.

  • Ask your children what they would like to do. You might be surprised!

  • Do nothing. Ah, lovely.

I hope this list inspires you to think of even more ways to enjoy your family time and opens your eyes to how much nicer your evenings and weekends could be without homework...

Have fun!
