Right now, though, I'd like to talk about this website and my SBI business.

Over the years, I have worked for others and worked for myself. There are pros and cons to both, but I believe that EVERYBODY needs to have their own business.

1. Freedom to Make the Best Choices
   Life is not static. Things change. Since the day I started this site, I have experienced a number of major changes in my life: a separation from my husband (we were already in the process), the illness of a family member, two new jobs, selling my home, and a move. Whew!

   There have been times when I have thought, "Hold on! Things are changing too fast," but I knew that I was making the best decisions for myself and my children. Because I had my own business, I did not have to stay in a job, home or personal situation because of money.

   So many people are stuck doing things they don't want to do, living where they don't want to live, working where they don't want to work- all because they can't afford to make the best choices.

   Money does not buy happiness, but it does buy choices.

2. You Can't 'Bank' On Any Job
   Millions of people have learned that when it comes to employment, there is no such thing as a "sure thing," and it is no different for most teachers. Unless you have been with a school district for a long, long time, there is no guarantee that you will have a job each year. My last position was as a training specialist, and when funds dried up, my position was cut.

   Having my own business meant I didn't have to worry about giving myself a pink slip.

3. Divorce, sickness, death, job loss, foreclosure. If you haven't been personally affected by these things, you probably have family or friends or coworkers or neighbors that have.

   No, owning your own business does not keep bad things from happening, but if you enjoy your business, it can bring excitement and happiness into your life.

   Better yet, if your business helps others, "work" becomes "service."

   I love helping students and their families navigate the educational landscape, get and stay organized, figure out how to deal with homework and studying, and how to become strong readers and independent learners. I help them, but I end up feeling better!

4. Assets Disappear
   Have you seen the value of your house drop? Is your retirement nest egg looking more like a nest without an egg? The economy has done a number on our assets!

   One thing that keeps me from obsessing about the value of my mutual funds, stocks and IRAs is that I have a business and a steady income stream. Not only does my own business allow me to save money, it helps me stay calm and leave my long term assets alone!

   I know that if I didn't have my "business back up," I would be sorely tempted to sell stock, cash in some funds and run screaming for the hills!

5. We All Deserve Some Fun!
   The economy is a mess, people are scared and frugality is "in." It's all about spending less, saving more and getting out of debt. While these are definitely noble endeavors, I don't want to spend all of my time denying myself.

   It is a crime to go out to dinner once in a while, buy a new outfit or take your children on a special trip? No, but sometimes we feel like criminals for doing these very things!

   "Can I afford it?"

   "Should I save this money?"

   We don't want to be wasteful, but sometimes the answer's gotta be "Who Cares?"

   One of the reasons that I my own business is so that I can afford to have fun: eat out, go shopping for myself and my children, travel, get my hair done. I can even buy a fancy $4.00 coffee once in awhile!

Dealing with stress, providing a service to others, controlling my finances and having fun- these are the reasons why, whether or not I have an "outside" job, I always have a side business of my own.

Admittedly, I am one of those people that doesn't need a list of reasons to own a business. I suppose I am a "natural entrepreneur," so having my own business just "feels right."

It's a good thing being an entrepreneur makes sense because I would do it, anyway!
